At the same time, we want to be participants in ensuring the world in which these children are now able to grow up is thriving just as much as they are.

That's why, starting in March 2021, we began contributing to the Jari Para Forest Conservation Project in the Amazon Rainforest.

About the Jari Para Project

Jari Pará, an avoided deforestation project, preserves 50,480 hectares of primarily virgin Amazon forest. The project, which aims to promote forest conservation and reduce potential greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), likewise emphasizes the importance of local economic development. Over the project’s 30-year lifetime, it is expected to sequester nearly 15 tonnes of carbon emissions. To prevent illegal deforestation, the project has pledged extensive surveillance and monitoring.

The project provides habitat to at least 2070 species of animal (133 of which are endangered), and at least 340 species of plants (54 of which are endangered). Given the project’s location, it forms an important ecological corridor with surrounding Conservation Units. Jari Pará also provides direct benefits to the hundreds of rural families whose livelihoods depend on the forest. The project runs a Technical Assistance and Rural Extension program to educate local stakeholders on sustainable agricultural practices. Further, Jari Pará uses revenue from carbon credit sales to build energy and communications infrastructure for the communities.

How It Works

Whenever you make a purchase, we offset the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) that is emitted into the atmosphere from the delivery of your order from our warehouse to your door.

A carbon offset reduces the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere so that increased greenhouse gases elsewhere have a net impact of 0. For example, if your shipment releases 500 g of CO2, then we fund the cost of actions to preserve a forest to remove 500 g of CO2 from the atmosphere, allowing the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere to remain the same.

Through verified data from Pachama, combined with industry data and peer-reviewed models, we determine how much CO2 your shipments release into the environment. Factors taken into account include the weight of the shipment, the distance traveled, and the transportation method. The cost is then multiplied by a factor of 1.5 and rounded up to ensure the CO2 is fully offset.

This Saves Lives is currently funding the Jarí Para REDD+ Avoided Unplanned Deforestation project with Pachama. This is a Verified Carbon Standard certified project that will be verified by Pachama using their monitoring technology. The charges from Offset go towards protecting the existing forest, improving the biomass through better forest management practices, and verifying the progress of the project.
