ABOUT US

WHO WE ARE

In 2013, Kristen Bell, Ryan Devlin, Todd Grinnell, and Ravi Patel founded This Saves Lives with a mission to end severe acute malnutrition in children across the globe.

The company's initial vision began during a service trip that Ryan and Todd took to Liberia. They visited a local community and found themselves face-to-face with suffering children. As the deadliest form of malnutrition, the children suffering from severe acute malnutrition aren't simply hungry. They lack the necessary nutrition that their bodies desperately need.

Fueled to take action, Ryan and Todd found out about Plumpy'Nut®, a Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) specifically formulated for the nutritional rehabilitation of children from six months of age and adults suffering from severe acute malnutrition.

Their discovery led to the creation of our giving model.

Ryan and Todd met with their friends Kristen and Ravi and began creating the first recipes for This Saves Lives bars in Ravi's kitchen. Together as a team, they developed the first delicious snack bar recipes and the practical one-for-one approach—that for every purchase, they'd donate a packet of Plumpy'Nut.

Since This Saves Lives started, we’ve donated more than 29 million packets of life-saving food.

And we’re just getting started. Get to know our founders and find out even more about what our mission means to them.

 KRISTEN BELL

Occupation: This Saves Lives Co-Founder, Actor (Frozen, The Good Place)

How I Got Involved: Ryan and I met on the set of Veronica Mars and became great friends. He started talking to me about Plumpy'Nut and how there isn't enough of it in the world. I was familiar with the packets, and when he reached out with a simple solution to get more in kids' hands - I was in.

Why Fighting Malnutrition Is So Important To Me: My goal in life is to spread more joy and reduce suffering any way I can. It makes me feel good when I lay my head on the pillow at night that I could be of service to someone else.

Best Part Of Working At This Saves Lives: Although we’re a snack food company, we are actually in the business of doing good. It makes me feel purposeful knowing we are changing children’s lives around the world.

Favorite This Saves Lives Memory: I was in Ryan's kitchen watching him bake some of the first versions of our snack bars. While he cooked, I tried all of our bars and was deemed 'Chief Taste Officer.'

Favorite Flavor: Madagascar Vanilla Almond & Honey

 RYAN DEVLIN

Occupation: This Saves Lives Co-Founder, Dad, Sometimes on TV

How I Got Involved: Todd and I took a humanitarian trip to Liberia where we met kids who were suffering from severe malnutrition. It was heartbreaking… but also inspiring because we saw the incredibly simple, life-saving nutrition that was returning them to health. We decided right there to get more nutrition to kids in need, so back home we met up with our friends Ravi and Kristen to figure out how. We made a LOT of snack bars in our kitchens and then partnered up with the best non-profit orgs around. Before long, This Saves Lives was born!

Why Fighting Malnutrition Is So Important To Me: I have a kid of my own; an adventurous little dude that doesn’t have to worry about where his next healthy meal is going to come from. I’m so grateful that’s the case, but it isn’t so for millions of kids on this planet we all call home. Insane, right?! ALL children deserve to grow up healthy, strong, and able to change the world around them. We can help make that happen!

Best Part Of Working At This Saves Lives: An endless supply of the best damn bars in the world! Oh, and saving lives. That’s pretty rad too.

Favorite This Saves Lives Memory: The wacky, sleep-deprived, granola-fueled early days of the company in Ravi’s condo. Creating something from scratch... and then seeing the impact we were having on real kids. What a feeling!

Favorite Flavor: Whatever our newest one is :)

TODD GRINNELL

Occupation: This Saves Lives Co-Founder, Actor (One Day at a Time)

How I Got Involved: I traveled to Liberia on a humanitarian trip with my friend Ryan to rebuild a bridge for a small village. On one of our last days there, we toured a refugee camp and came face to face with the malnutrition crisis when we saw dozens of children wasting away because they didn’t have enough food. Right then and there, we knew we had to do something.

Why Fighting Malnutrition Is So Important To Me: I’ve been very fortunate in my life to never want for food. Nobody should ever want for food. Everyone should have the chance to thrive.

Best Part Of Working At This Saves Lives: I’ve really loved collaborating with designers to develop our new visual identity. But the best part is seeing beautiful smiles on the faces of the children we provide life-saving food to, and also seeing the joy on their family’s faces when they see their children thriving.

Favorite This Saves Lives Memory: Traveling to Haiti to meet the children we've helped.

Favorite Flavor: Dark Chocolate & Coconut (but really all of them ; ))

RAVI PATEL

Occupation: This Saves Lives Co-Founder, Actor (Wrecked, Master of None), Writer/Director (Meet the Patels)

How I Got Involved: Ryan and I acted in our first television pilot together. I had been an investment banker and entrepreneur prior to getting into entertainment. Ryan called and told me about this idea he and Todd had, and I had to get involved. And now I know more about granola than I wish on my worst enemy.

Why Fighting Malnutrition Is So Important To Me: Isn't it obvious? It's a basic human right to eat. It's unfair to be born into circumstances where basic nutrition cannot be provided. Similarly, to be born into circumstances where I have a roof over my head and food means saying thank you to this privilege by doing whatever possible to help others get the same. Also, it feels good to do good, so I also do it for myself.

Best Part Of Working At This Saves Lives: Beyond the impact, I love our team. Great personalities. Such good-hearted and intelligent people who truly care about the mission. In general this experience has introduced me to so many interesting people - I love that.

Favorite This Saves Lives Memory: This weekend, my wife made me throw some pairs of shoes away - I have too many apparently. One of the shoes was a pair of running shoes I bought six years ago at a Wal-Mart at one a.m. when myself Ryan and Todd were on the way to our manufacturing facility for our first production of bars.

Favorite Flavor: Dark Chocolate & Peanut Butter, no question.
